I attended Mills College, in Oakland, California. My major
was Psychology, with an emphasis on Life Span Development. My time at Mills was rich, and in addition to the
work I did for my major, I explored sociology, women's studies, photography, and Spanish. Throughout my time there
I was also continuing my work with children, as a nanny, and later as a teacher at a local preschool.
I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in 1999, and moved to
Portland, Oregon. There I took a job with Early Head Start, where I co-created and ran their first Parent-Infant
Playgroup. The program included home visits, group classes, and curriculum development, and all was done in English,
Spanish, and Sign Language.
After a year, the program was well-established, and I left Early Head
Start. My time in social work had been rewarding and challenging, but I didn't feel fulfilled in my heart and knew there
was something different I was meant to do. I took a nanny job with a beautiful three month old baby, and in the process
discovered the amazing world of doulas. Supported by my new employers, I attended a Birth Doula training at Barbara
Harper's Waterbirth International, and was soon a certified Birth Doula (through DONA). I volunteered at a local hospital, and continued to nanny while I gained birth experience.
